Today’s Reading: Numbers 8:1-9:23 (additional reading Psalm 50:1-23 and Proverbs 10:29-30)

Key Verse: “Whenever the cloud lifted from over the sacred tent, the people of Israel would break camp and follow it. And wherever the cloud settled, the people of Israel would set up camp.” Numbers 9:17

Today’s reading shows us that the people had to look to see if the Cloud was moving each and every day. This passage reminds me of our instructions in Hebrews 12:1-2 which says that we should ‘Fix our eyes upon Jesus’. Here is the test of trust, they had to look up for guidance each day and trust for each step. The Greek word here signifies “To turn the face upward”.

I heard a preacher give this illustration of trust God. He said that when we trust God we trust Him for each step. It is like walking on the beach with God is in front. We just follow his footprints and put our feet where he has trod before the sand can blow over and hide the footprint. In the illustration, we are not looking to see where we are going. We are not even looking where God is going. We are just trusting him for each step and keeping our eyes on Him. This is a beautiful picture of what trust is and of where the Hebrews found themselves. They didn’t know where they were going or even where God was leading, but they just had to keep their eyes on him and trust him daily.

Wherever the Cloud or Fire went the people were to follow. Imagine they could no longer PLAN. We are people who desire predictability! James 4:13-15 “Now listen you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there and carry on business and make money.” Why you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”

Jesus said, “I am the way.”He moved when God had Him move, stood still when God said to stand still, spoke when He was told to and kept silent when He was supposed to. He said nothing without first hearing it from the Father!

The Cloud offered the people shade from the heat of the day and the Fire heat during the cold of the desert night. God not only wants us to trust him for our guidance but also to lean on His provision. Acts 17:28 is motto by which we should all live “For in Him we live, and move and have our being”.

Reflection

  • Do you struggle to trust God for each step?
  • How can you move forward without knowing the final destination?
  • How has God guided you?

Prayer

Father, Thank You that You guide and provide for us. Help us to trust You for each step we take and to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen
