“Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” – Romans 11:35

There are times in our life where God grants us unexpected gifts. Someone may say to us, “I feel God is prompting me to give you this gift.” On other occasions, we may pray for something that was out of our reach, and then all of a sudden God grants us that request. In these moments we can not fail to recognise God’s grace towards us.

More often than not, we don’t have the same attitude about the things we earn for ourselves. The lesson we must learn as faithful stewards is that even the ability to work is a gift from God.

But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. – Deuteronomy 8:18

God does not only give us the ability to work but He is also the source of all wealth.

To the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it. – Deuteronomy 10:14

There is nothing in the whole of the earth that does not belong to God. It is from the term used here for ‘Lord’, we get the word we use for ‘landlord’. This helps us further to understand that we don’t actually own the things we think we own. A slave is totally upon the Master for everything: food, clothing, housing, health care, security, and even status. They have no nothing of their own, not even the rags upon their backs.

How does this translate into our life? It means that everything we possess, from the car in the driveway, the roof over our head, the clothes hanging in our wardrobe and the cash in our bank account, all belong to God. The only reason we have them is that the Master gives them to us.

Let us take this a step further. It means our children, grandchildren, spouse, career, friends, the water we drink, the air we breathe, our body and the precious life that resides within our body, all proceeds from Jesus Christ, our Lord and Master.

These truths are nothing new, but how often do we live as if they are valid? We must learn that everything is a gift from God given to us to enjoy and glorify Him.

  • What things do you view as yours and not God’s?
  • How can you be a better steward of the thing God has put in your hands?

Father, thank You for reminding me that you are the owner of the earth and all that is in it. That includes all I am and all I have. Help me to be a better steward of the resources that you have blessed me with in Jesus’ name, Amen.
