Today’s Reading: Genesis 41

Key Verse:  Then Pharaoh removed his signet ring from his hand and placed it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in fine linen clothing and hung a gold chain around his neck. – Genesis 41:42

Joseph had just finished telling Pharaoh the interpretations of his two dreams before “Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has revealed the meaning of the dreams to you, clearly no one else is as intelligent or wise as you are” (Genesis 41:39). As a result Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of his whole court, removed his signet ring from his hand and placed it on Joseph’s finger.

The signet ring was more than a piece of jewelry. It was the official ring with which state documents would be sealed. To hold the king’s seal, was to possess his authority. When Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of Egypt he gave him a seal in the form of a signet ring (Genesis 41:41-42). The seal meant that he had Pharaoh’s authority.

In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is referred as a seal. (See 2 Corinthians 1:22, 5:5, Ephesians 1:13-14). When Jesus sent out the disciples in the great commission he sent them out with authority, but told them not to go until they had first received the Holy Spirit. We may not have a signet ring on our finger, but we have the Holy Spirit living in us and through us. As the signet ring validated Joseph’s authority granted by Pharaoh, the Holy Spirit validates us as Jesus’ disciple, sent out under his authority.

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations.” – Matthew 28:19
