Today’s Reading: 1 Samuel 22
Key Verse: A little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough! – Galatians 5:9
When we distant ourselves from God, things go from worst to worst. In our text, Saul arrives at an all-time low. By chapter 22, Saul has totally lost the plot. The intensity and frequency of his depression and jealousy increase. He is in a continuous state of fear, jealousy and insanity.
Saul’s jealousy of David drives him to start killing other innocent people. Saul attempts to execute all the priests and their families. Saul began by thinking he knew better than God in not killing the Amalekites. Now he is killing the God’s priests, and their families and cattle. How low can Saul sink? Saul, who initially failed to carry out God’s command, is now a raving maniac, who has fallen so far and so quickly, he ordered all of the priests to be put to death.
Saul’s life shows us how fast and how far a sin can pull us downward. Sin hold on our life grows rapidly. One lie leads to another, one look leads to lust and one moment of anger leads to murder. Sin almost always appears to be harmless, but it is never long before its real character is evident.
The Bible uses the picture of yeast in Galatians 5:9, “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” Like yeast, if our sin is left alone it will spread. Sin must be dealt with swiftly, lest it spreads and do even more harm.
