Today’s Reading: Matthew 8:18-34
Key Verses: “Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” Matthew 8:19-20
In today’s reading, Jesus shows with brutal honesty the cost of following Him. He wants us to have our eyes wide open as we seek to follow him. It’s not always easy being a follower of Jesus. As the teacher of the law comes excitedly to promise and to follow Jesus anywhere, Jesus is essence replied: “Are you REALLY sure you want to do this?”
Disciples not only believe in Jesus, but they also live for him. When Jesus said, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” He was not living under bridges; He didn’t say I am a poor homeless person. The Bible tells us many welcomed him into their home and the disciples even had Judas as a treasurer.
So what’s Jesus saying here? He’s saying that he was constantly on the move, that you might be sleeping in a different place each night, and that you’ll probably be camping most of the time. It would involve letting go of your earthly priorities and possessions for his sake. It would mean living according to his schedule, not yours. So here’s the question he was asking then, and that he’s asking you now: “Are you willing to let Jesus run the show? Are you willing to become identified as a follower of Jesus no matter what? Are you REALLY sure you want to do this?”
We live in an age of ease. Many people want to add Jesus to their life, without any cost. Jesus wants us to know there is a human cost to following Him. People may hate and persecute us for following Jesus. Nevertheless, whatever the cost is for us, it cost Jesus more. Jesus laid down his life that we may become his disciples.
