Our personal, growing, living relationship with God is the basis for any mentoring relationship we may have. Our walk with God must be of first priority.

In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Paul writes the following:

“You’ve all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally. I don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got. No sloppy living for me! I’m staying alert and in top condition. I’m not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.” (the message).

We can see that Paul took his responsibility very seriously. Like a runner trying to get the prize, Paul was determined to root out everything that would stand between him and the eternal prize. He didn’t allow his body or desires have mastery over him.

As mentors, we must lead self-disciplined lives of love and service for God. Our relationship with Him will serve as the basis for any growth. Therefore it is essential that we commit to leading sinless, exemplary lives, out of our love for God.
