Key Verse: “Jesus gave his life for our sins, just as God our Father planned, in order to rescue us from this evil world in which we live.” Galatians 1:4
The early disciples, like us, contended with the culture in which they lived. The early church was forced to live under religious, social, and political opposition. We are aware through history of the intense hatred for these brothers and sisters, which grew rapidly under the reign of Nero. We have heard stories of how Rome burned them to death, fed them alive to wild animals, and publicly put them to death in the amphitheatres. Furthermore, if the murders in the amphitheatres were not enough to entertain this carnal society, it was common for them to engage in sexual scenes on stage to please the audience.
Much like the Roman society, we also live in an entertainment culture. We live in a society that will do anything it can to call our attention to it, rather than on Jesus. The world’s tempts us with the latest gadgets and fashion, the fastest cars, endless online streaming of movies and music, shopping centres the size of small cities, and twenty-four hour nightclubs. Don’t let your love of this world, rob your love for God.
We must carefully examine our ways to see if they conform to God’s ways or the ways of this world. 1 John 2:15-17 warns us, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust thereof.”
We are sent to bless the world, but never are we told to compromise with it. We are called to be light, a contrast the world which is in darkness.
