Today’s Reading: 1 Samuel 8
Key Verse: Look,” they told him, “you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have. 1 Samuel 8:5
We may claim we want to show our individuality, but in reality we spend much of our lives trying to fit into the crowd. We want to be like our neighbours and people around us. Maybe you’ve someone said, “everybody is doing it, what is wrong with me doing it too?” Well, what everybody is doing is not what God wants us to be doing.
Israel aspired to be like the other nations. They wanted a man to lead them into battle.
God called them to be a chosen people. A people represent Him, but Israel instead wanted to look like everyone else. Scripture says we are to be “sanctified” or “set apart” unto God. We are supposed to look different from the world; not to conformed to it.
Too many believers are seeking to follow the way of the world. They want to look, sound land act like unbelievers. They choose to live with their partners before marriage; they offer to take a bribe in the office and cut corners. This ought not to be true.
In spite of all the Lord had done for Israel; they rejected Him to be like everyone else. Jesus said in John 15:19, “you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world.” We ought to living our lives as if this were true.
