More than just a “someday” thing
Today’s Reading: Revelation 8
Key Verse: “When He (the Lamb of God) opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.” Revelation 8:1
In chapter 6, we saw Jesus Christ opening the six seals of the scroll. With the opening of each one, a more severe punishment was delivered to a sinful and unrepentant world. In chapter 7, we saw a temporary restraint from these punishments. Picking up in chapter 8, we begin by seeing the 7th seal opened.
“When He (the Lamb of God) opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.”
We do not know exactly why there was this period of silence, but we know that it is very significant and comes from God. It is like when we hold our breath for a moment just before or after something significant happens.
As we read these accounts, they can be difficult to understand (with many scholars disagreeing on the exact meaning). What is important to remember however is this is more than just a “someday” thing. It’s not something we can just file as not yet relevant. It isn’t just a “someday” thing – it is an emergency status because it could be happening any day!
We must understand this urgency. This urgency will be the main thing that will help us withstand the pressures of telling others about Jesus and His loving plan of salvation. Without this urgency, it becomes nothing but “just a story.”
