Today’s reading: 1 Samuel 14

Key Verse: “One day Jonathan said to his armorbearer, “Come on, let’s go over to where the Philistines have their outpost.” But Jonathan did not tell his father what he was doing.” 1 Samuel 14:1

Israel is again at war with the Philistines. As the battle waits, King Saul sits back, in a safe place. He lays around in comfort under the shade of a pomegranate tree where the fruit can be had without much effort.

Jonathan, Saul’s son was tired of waiting around for his father to do something, so he decided to strike out on his own and go against the Philistines. So Jonathan and his armour bearer struck out on their own to go to the enemy’s camp and God gave them the victory. The battle was nearly over before Saul even knew what was happening.

Like Jonathan, sometimes we have to make up our mind to go and do something. We cannot afford to sit around forever and do nothing. Sadly, Saul is a picture of many a churchgoer who is comfortable in church with people like them, but who have lost the zeal to fight the good fight and win souls for Christ. When we step out into the battlefield to win souls for His Kingdom, we can be assured that God will fight the battle for us. There is no limit to God’s power! He can change the world with only one man or woman who will surrender to His will. There is a dying world outside the church doors, we must leave our comfort zone and take the gospel to them.
