Key Verse: “And giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.” – Colossians 1:12
In 2009, Brothers Zsolt and Geza Peladi were so poor they lived in a cave outside Budapest, Hungary. Then one day, they receive some very unexpected news, their long-lost grandmother had died and left them an inheritance of 4 billion GBP,
Inheritance is often a bittersweet topic among families when a person passes away. On the one hand there is gain to be had, but on the other hand, there is great loss. If you were the child of a billionaire, you would be considered foolish to discard the last will and testament of your wealthy parent, and rejecting the money and inheritance would be an act of defiance or stupidity.
Nonetheless, there are many believers living life and ignoring the inheritance given them in Christ. The Bible says in Acts 20:32, “I commit you to God and to the Word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” When you accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, you’re not just a believer, but you become a part of God’s family. Family privileges come along with that decision. God does not offer us untold riches, but an inheritance more beautiful, more satisfying and fulfilling than all the gold on earth. Even 4 billion GBP will one day pass away, but in Christ, we have an inheritance that can never perish. It’s not just for a lifetime but for eternity.
Just as the tribes in the Old Testament Israel were given land as an inheritance, we too will be given things beyond our imagining when we are finally in heaven. And just as the eleven tribes received the Promised Land and one tribe received the Lord as their inheritance, we too have the Father. Yes, one day we will inherit the Father through the Son as our inheritance- full access to himself, his glory, his wisdom and his magnificence for all of eternity.
David makes this clear in Psalm 73 when he states, ‘I desire you more than anything on earth…. He is mine forever’. Don’t set your mind on any earthly inheritance which is passed onto your children just as fast as it came to you, but rather set your sights on your eternal inheritance- the Lord Himself.
