Today’s Reading: 1 Samuel 9
Key Verse: Saul was the most handsome man in Israel—head and shoulders taller than anyone else in the land. 1 Samuel 9:2
What would happen if God gave us everything we wanted? If you were an Israelite looking for someone to lead the army against the Philistines, Saul was the obvious choice. He was a young, good looking man, who stood head and shoulders above everyone else. He was someone the whole army would look up to, literally. He was a great choice, at least by human standards?
It was almost as if God was saying, “If you want a king, I’ll give you one. And he will be just the sort of king want.” Yet as we will see in the next couple of days, that his performance would not match his image. This is what happens to us when we allow physical appearances to determine who we will marry, who we will employ, where we will live, what church we will attend and so on.
How do you make choice? Are you more interested in how you look outwardly (nice car, big house and new clothes), than your spiritual health. How do you judge; by the outward appears or the inner appearance?
We must ask God to guide us, and lead us by his standards, or we will be carried away by the world’s standards. Romans 12:2 says, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
We should thank God that He doesn’t give us everything we ask for, but guards us from our own desire to work out His good, pleasing and perfect plan for our lives.
