Today’s Reading: 2 Samuel 17:1-29 (additional reading: Psalm 119:129-152 and Proverbs 16:12-13)
In 2 Samuel 17:14 it says ‘Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the Lord their God’.
How many of us know right from wrong? It is fair to say most, but a very different question is a how many who know right from wrong do the right thing? When we know right from wrong and we still choose to do wrong, then I believe that we suffer from one of two problems. Firstly, we don’t care about the consequences and secondly, we simply have no respect for authority.
Have you ever told your children step-by-step instruction on how you want things done? You gave them so much information that they do not have to even think for themselves, yet and still, they go off and do the very opposite of what you instructed them to do.
It’s as if they are saying Daddy, I know what you said…, but I chose to do things my way. Daddy, I know what you said… but my ways are better than your ways.
Well, that is exactly what we see here in our text. God gave Israel step-by-step instructions and yet they chose to do things their way. But that is not just what we see in today’s text, that is also what we see in today’s world and sadly often in our lives today.
What will you let influences your decisions? Your own desires, the world around you, your ‘needs’ or the word of God. Psalm 18:30 says ‘As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.’
Are you living the life God wants you to live?
Father, Thank You for You love for us. Thank You that You give us a perfect way to live. Help us to stop living so much for self and to honour You with our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
