Key Verse: For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:3
One of the books that has influenced me most in recent years is Corrie Ten Boom’s biography “The Hiding Place.” Corrie ten Boom and her family were Dutch Christians who helped many Jews escape the Nazi Holocaust, hiding them in their home in a specially built room and aiding their escape. For their help, the entire family was imprisoned and sent to terrible concentration camps. The title refers to the secret place where the family hid countless Jews in their home and is also based upon Psalm 119:114, “You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word.”
Colossians 3:3 tells us our life is hidden with Christ. Our old life is past away, and we are now safe and secure with Christ. Note that we are not alone, but with Christ Jesus; in Christ Jesus. So what does it mean to be hidden with Christ in God?
HE IS A SAFE HIDING PLACE: “You hide them in the shelter of your presence, safe from those who conspire against them. You shelter them in your presence, far from accusing tongues.” Psalm 31:20
HE IS A SURE HIDING PLACE: “For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.” (Psalm 27:5).
HE IS A SECRET HIDING PLACE: “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” (Psalm 32:7). The word hiding here is the same as Jonathan used in 1 Samuel 19:2, telling David to hide from Saul. It is also the word that could be applied to Corrie Ten Boom’s room. It is a place where the enemy can’t find you.
HE IS A COMFORTABLE HIDING PLACE: “I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.” (Psalm 61:4) The verse paints the picture of us of young birds taking comfort in the mother bird’s wings or like a child finding comfort in their parents embrace.
HE IS A STRONG HIDING PLACE: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). What safer place is there to be than in the shelter of the Almighty God?
HE IS A PROTECTED HIDING PLACE: “You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.” (Psalm 119:114). God put his shield around us and protects us from attack.
HE IS AN INTIMATE HIDING PLACE: “My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hiding places on the mountainside, show me your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely. (Song of Songs 2:14). Here is the reminder that we are not hidden alone, but hidden with Christ where there is intimacy. Where we can listen to His voice and look upon his face.
