Key Verse: “Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.” Ephesians 4:24
Aesop told a famous fable of a scorpion who asks the frog to carry him across a river on its back. The frog asks, “How do I know you won’t sting me?” The scorpion replies, “Because if I did, I would die also.” The frog was satisfied, and they set out, but halfway across, the scorpion stings the frog. As the frog starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, he has just enough time to gasp, “Why?” The scorpion replied, “It’s just my nature.”
It has been rightly said that if there is anything good in any man, it is because God put it there. Prior to new birth, the only ability, we possessed was to serve ourselves. As hard as we tried to be better, just like the scorpion in Aesop’s fable, we failed due to our nature.
What occurs at new birth is not the improvement of our old human nature, but rather the creation of a new nature, which is forgiven and cleansed; with the ability to follow God. We’re given a new nature which desires God and holiness. The new nature happens instantaneously. Sanctification, on the other hand, is the process by which God develops our new nature, empowering us to grow more like Him.
