Key Verse: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. – Deuteronomy 6:4-5 NIV
It may at first seem like a simple thing to believe that God is one. Yet as our understanding grows and we learn of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, we can quickly struggle with the fact. The problem is that it makes no logical sense. I once had a theology teacher who taught, “1 + 1 + 1 = 1, Bad mathematics but good theology. There is one God yet he is three persons. Not three gods united in one goal, not three manifestations of the one God but one God in three persons.
Our God is one, but with a special kind of oneness. This oneness echoes throughout both the Old and New Testaments. From the verse first verse of Scripture, Genesis 1:1 uses Elohim, the plural form of God, but joined with a singular verb. Right up to Revelation 21:22 where the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple, we see the oneness of God demonstrated. The greatest commandment in Deuteronomy 6:4-5, The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
Our faith in the one eternal God stands in contrast to false religions which exist today and have gone before. Think of ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt and Babylon. All of these civilizations worshiped multiple gods, each believed to control different aspects of earthly life, but Paul by the Spirit of the Lord stood firm on Mars Hill in the book of Acts and rebuked such worship. Our God controls all aspects of life because He alone is the creator of all. We as believers know that all the other ‘gods’ of this world, such as Baal, Zeus, Apollo, Jupiter, etc. are nothing more than Satan and his angels desiring the worship that is due only to God. We must each be careful not to exalt anything to God position in our lives, or trust in anyone other than Him. He alone is the ruler and creator of all and always in perfect harmony.
