Today’s Reading: Leviticus 7:28-9:6 (additional reading Psalm 37:12-29 and Proverbs 10:5)

Key Verse: “Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments.” Leviticus 8:30

In the eighth chapter of Leviticus, we will discover four similarities that teach us that the Priesthood of the Old Testament is like the Royal Priesthood of the New Testament.

1) CHRISTIANS LIKE THE O.T. PRIESTS ARE CHOSEN DIVINELY TO MINISTRY

God said to Moses in Exodus 28:1, “Have Aaron your brother, brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons (Nadab and Abihu, Eleasar and Ithamar) so that they may serve me as priests”. The sons of Aaron did not decide on their own that they were going to be priests. Rather, they were called by God, and told that they are going to serve God as Priests. You can be confident that God has given you a ministerial gift. Whatever He has called you to, preacher, worship leader, carer, clown, puppeteer, dancer, cleaner… be sure of your calling and then serve him faithfully. When God calls you something that is what you are. Stop trying to be someone else. YOU ARE A ROYAL PRIEST.

2) CHRISTIANS LIKE THE O.T. PRIESTS ARE ALSO CLEANSED SPIRITUALLY

In Leviticus 8:6 we read that they were washed with water. This whole washing was a one-time event in their life. Later we find them washing their hands and feet many times, but they were only once bathed completely, at the time of their entrance into the priesthood. There was also a sacrifice and the application of blood. As God’s Priests today, we have also been cleansed spiritually. (Hebrews 7:27). 1 Corinthians 6:11 ‘And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God”.

3) CHRISTIANS LIKE THE O.T. PRIESTS ARE TO BE CLOTHED PROPERLY

After Aaron’s sons had been washed, they waited while their father Aaron the High Priest was clothed and then they too were clothed. The New Testament’s Royal Priesthood are also to be dressed properly. Paul tells us in Galatians 3:27 that when we are baptised when we are immersed in the name of Jesus, that we put on Christ. We are to take off, our worldly clothes, which were sewn with threads stained by selfishness and sin. And we are to wrap around our lives Christ; we are to be covered with the very character of Jesus.

4) CHRISTIANS LIKE THE O.T. PRIESTS ARE TO BE FULLY COMMITTED

Blood on the Ear; symbolised the commitment of their mind to the Lord. They were to think upon Holy things.
Blood on the Thumb; symbolised that they were committing what the work that they would do to the Lord. They were to fill their hands with Holy things.
Blood on the Toe; symbolised that they were committing themselves to walk in Holy Places. They were to be God’s servants from head to toe.

Contrary to popular opinion and practice, this truth that God requires total and full commitment from His Priests is as real today as it was 3400 years ago. The Royal Priests of the New Testament are also to be God’s servant from head to toe. We are, as Paul says in Romans 12:1, to give our very lives to God as a living sacrifice,” from head to toe.”

Reflection

  • Have you been trying to serve in a ministry where God has not called you?
  • How can you be fully committed to serving God?
  • What does it mean to you today to be clothed in Christ?

Prayer

Father, Thank You that You have called us not only to yourself but also to a specific ministry. Help us to serve you wholeheartedly and with total commitment. Thank you for removing our dirty rags and clothing us in Christ’s righteousness. In Jesus’ name, Amen
