Today’s Reading: Deuteronomy 21:1-22:30 (additional reading Psalm 74:1-23 and Proverbs 12:11)
Key Verse: “ Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it.” Deuteronomy 22:3
In Deuteronomy 22 we see a phrase appearing time after time ‘don’t ignore it or don’t ignore your responsibility.’ A common question I hear people asking in the Christian world is, ‘is God trying to get my attention?’. I can assure that God is always trying to get your attention. The problem is that often we find ourselves to busy to pay attention.
Most of the time we are too cluttered with our own lives, to allow God to show us the things which are important to Him. In Deuteronomy 22 we see such things as finding a sheep which belongs to someone else. It would be easy to ignore such a thing, sheep are famous for getting lost, why should we go out of our way for a sheep? For us imagine if we found something in the street or the park, it would be easy to wait and allow someone else to sort it out, but God is saying, ‘when I catch your attention to something, I want you to act on it.”
Sometimes we spend so long waiting for God to speak to us in some amazing way that we don’t allow him to speak to us in our everyday life. This is exactly what Jesus was talking about in Matthew 25:33-40 when he said
‘ For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
What everyday things will God call your attention to today? The easiest thing in the world is simply to walk past and let someone else deal with it, but God is given you an example shine for Him.
- Have you been ignoring your responsibilities?
- How can you be more aware of the opportunities that God gives you each day?
Father, Thank You for calling our attention to ways we can serve You and bless others. Help us not to ignore the things You are calling us to do but to be faithful as You are faithful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
