Today’s Reading: 1 Kings 8:1-66 (additional reading: Psalm 129:1-8 and Proverbs 17:1)
Bertoldo de Giovanni is a name even the most enthusiastic lover of art is unlikely to recognize. He was the pupil of Donatello, the greatest sculptor of his time, and he was the teacher of Michelangelo, the greatest sculptor of all time. Michelangelo was only 14 years old when he came to Bertoldo, but it was already obvious that he was enormously gifted. Bertoldo was wise enough to realize that gifted people are often tempted to coast rather than to grow, and therefore he kept trying to pressure his young prodigy to work seriously at his art. One day he came into the studio to find Michelangelo toying with a piece of sculpture far beneath his abilities. Bertoldo grabbed a hammer, stomped across the room, and smashed the work into tiny pieces, shouting this unforgettable message, “Michelangelo, talent is cheap; dedication is costly!”
In 1 Kings 8.63 “Solomon offered for the sacrifice peace offerings, which he offered to the Lord, 22,000 oxen and 120, 000 sheep, so the king and all the sons of Israel dedicated the house of the Lord.” (Verse 64 more sacrifice than the altar could hold)
Can you imagine how big this sacrifice was? 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep? Solomon realised that the building was worth nothing if God was not in it. It wasn’t the building that was important (as amazing as it was) but God’s presence.
God’s presence living through us requires dedication and dedication requires sacrifice. The Bible calls us to “Present your bodies a living sacrifice.” Philippians 1.20 “According to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or death.”
Everything that we do finds it worth in God being part of it. That is where the success is. Are you looking at some amazing achievements in your life, yet you still feel unfulfilled? Did you just finish building a big house or new business? The question we need to ask ourselves is ‘ have we dedicated our lives and everything that we do to God?
- How are you leaving God out of your life?
- Are you dedicated in your Christian walk?
Father, Thank You for being interested in our lives and being part of them. Help us to honour you with everything we have and everything we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen
