To the Christian there is no greater “mentor” than the Lord Jesus Christ. He turned a meek and fearful people into an invincible body of over-comers in a way which can only be aspired to. He brought us from a life full of darkness and sin into his wonderful and glorious light.
Unlike Christ we can not bring about this sort of change in people. Only God can change peoples life in this way but we are giving the gift and the privilege to partnership with the Holy Spirit, we are called then to inspire and promote authentic living. We are to take our example from Jesus’ life and works. WE are to allow the same characteristics which marked his life to mark our own.
Mentoring then while a broad term, in the church means discipleship. It is the process of helping a man or woman to develop his or her maximum potential in Jesus Christ.
John Maxwell said that a mentor “is one who knows the way, goes the way and leads others in the way.”
Mentoring is not magnetic personality, that can just as well be charisma. It is not “making friends and influencing people”, that is flattery. It’s not gaining a position where by you become a leader. Mentoring is lifting a person’s vision to higher sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations to the reach their maximum potential in Jesus Christ.
It is quite simply giving encouragement to those who rely on your wisdom and knowledge which God has graced you with. It your changed life, changing a life so that a life can be changed.
