Today’s Reading: Leviticus 11:1-12:8 (additional reading Psalm 38:1-22and Proverbs 10:8-9)

Key Verse: “I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.” Leviticus 11:44

We serve a holy God. God says in Leviticus 11:44 “I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.” In a couple of sentences, he gives us the motive for being holy. Because He is. The call to be something is not about us it’s about Him. We exist for Him, for His glory, for His purposes.

Elmer Towns has said, “holiness may be one of the most difficult of the attributes to completely understand and define.”

Furthermore, Tozer writes, “We cannot grasp the true meaning of divine holiness. It stands apart, unique, unapproachable, incomprehensible, and unattainable. The nature of man is blind to it. He may fear God’s power and admire His wisdom, but His holiness, he can never even imagine.”

With these two men saying that Holiness is undefinable, other have tried to define the holiness of God, for example,

Tony Evans in his book Our God is Awesome attempts to define the holiness of God. He writes “The holiness of God is His intrinsic and transcendent purity, the standard of righteousness to which the whole universe must conform. God does not conform to any standard created by others. He is the standard. Therefore, He demands that His creation conforms to His standard.”

So with all that said I guess we cannot completely understand God’s holiness, however, we must strive to understand something of it.

  • To be Holy is to be distinct (Exodus 15:11, 1 Samuel 2:2, Psalms 86:8-10).
  • His Holiness is incomparable (Exodus 15:11, 1 Samuel 2:2).
  • His holiness can be seen in His Name (Isaiah 57:15, Luke 1:49) by His words (Jeremiah 23:9) and by his actions (Psalms 145:17).
  • We are to imitate His Holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16, Leviticus 11:44-45).

The challenge to imitate His Holiness is massive. The more I learn about His Holiness; the more unworthy I recognize I am. When I try to catch or see a glimpse of His Holiness, all I want to do is get down and hid because I am so unworthy. Like Isaiah, all I can cry out is “”Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” (Isaiah 6:5) Everything about God is holy yet the more we understand about His Holiness, the more we understand about his love. Even though we mess up so bad and so often, He still loves us, calls us and empowers us to ‘be holy, because He is Holy’ (Lev 11:44).

Reflection

  • How does God’s holiness also demonstrate His love?
  • How does Jesus serve as the perfect example of living a holy life on earth?
  • What steps can you take to imitate His Holiness?

Prayer

Father, Thank You that You are holy. Thank You that nothing compares to You. Help us to understand what it means to live a Holy life and to live as Your ambassadors on earth. Thank You for calling us and empowering us. In Jesus’ name, Amen
