Today’s Reading: 2 Kings 23:31-25:30 (additional reading: Psalm 2:1-12 and Proverbs 18:13)

How many of you want to be like Josiah in your passion for God’s word? Josiah’s efforts to renew the temple lead the people to find the lost book of the law. The book had been lost for years and even forgotten about. Can you imagine God’s people losing their founding document and the gracious revelation of God? Too often we are guilty of having underappreciated the revelation of God and its value.

A story is told of a man who loved old books. He met an acquaintance who had just thrown away a Bible that had been stored in the attic of his ancestral home for generations. “I couldn’t read it,” the friend explained. “Somebody named Guten-something had printed it.” “Not Gutenberg!” the book lover exclaimed in horror. “That Bible was one of the first books ever printed. Why a copy just sold for over two million dollars!” His friend was unimpressed. “Mine wouldn’t have brought a dollar. Some fellow named Martin Luther had scribbled all over it in German.” The man didn’t have an appreciation of what he had. But Josiah by his working to do what he knew was right, demonstrated an appreciation for the things of the Lord.

People devoted to God will receive His word. Josiah’s devotion to God led to a discovery of God’s word in the temple. Jesus said also said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

How many of you want to be like Josiah in your contact with God’s word? We must start by enjoying scripture in our own lives. We cannot study the word only to preach, teach it, or simply to enjoy its content. We must allow it to do its work in our lives first. (22:11) After we can see it affect our churches (23:1-3) and after it will change our societies (23:4-20).

Reflection

  • Are you passionate about God’s Word?
  • How can you have a love for God’s Word and allow it to change you?

Prayer

Father, Thank You for speaking to us through Your Word, the Bible. Thank You that it fills us with a love for You and helps us in every area of our lives. Help us not to forsake it, but to love it and read it daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen
