Today’s Reading: Luke 6:39-7:10 (additional reading: Psalm 68:1-18 & Proverbs 11:28)
We need to understand that even as Christians we have problems, it has been taught by many unlearned preachers that Your Life will be heaven on earth after salvation. I am surprised at the people that want to believe such things.
Heb.11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
We see the heroes of faith dying without seeing that life of ease that many Christians think they are entitled to.
Luke 6:47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
This is Jesus explaining about a STORM hitting a faithful committed praying, fasting Christian. We see the result of the STORM was violent but the effects were of no consequence. A solid foundation makes all the difference. The leaning tower of Pisa in Italy is going to fall. Scientists travel yearly to measure the building’s slow descent.
They report that the 179-foot tower moves about one-twentieth of an inch per year, and is now 17 feet out of plumb. They estimated that by the year 2007 the 810 year old it was only million of pounds to construction work that saved this and it is still a temporary fix.
Pisa = marshy land – This gives us a clue why the tower began to lean even before it was completed. Also, it’s foundation is only 10’ deep!
A solid foundation is important to the longevity of a building’s life. It is also crucial to the life and health of a church and our life in Christ.
Roger Staubach who led the Dallas Cowboys to the Superbowl in 1971 admitted that he struggled with accepting his assignment. Coach Tom Landry called in every play and the only time Staubach was allowed to call a play was in an emergency. Even though Staubach knew that Coach Landry had a genius mind for the game, pride told him that he should be able to run his own offense. Roger later said, “I faced up to the issue of obedience. Once I learned to obey there was harmony, fulfilment and victory.”
The issue in verse 46 of Luke was obedience. Jesus expected it of them, and he expects it of us today! We can build our lives on Jesus, submitting to his Lordship or we can try do things our way. When the storms come, your life will show where you put your foundation.
