Today’s Reading: Isaiah 22:1-24:23 (additional reading Psalm 60:1-12 and Proverbs 23:15-16)

It is clear that this text from Isaiah 22:15-25 has something more than just the removal of a man from the treasurer position and the appointment of a replacement. Here we see there is an eternal picture being painted in this portion of scripture. There is something that God is trying to show us that is deeper than the first read of the text.

Shebna the minister of the house is a perfect type of the Old Testament priesthood. The removal of Shebna from the Old Testament priesthood is God saying to Shebna the minister of the house, ‘why do you try to make your ministry eternal?’ (Isaiah 22:16)

Comparing this to the New Testament we see the problem with the old sacrifice.

Could not cleanse the conscience – Hebrews 9:9;
Could not perfect conscience – Hebrews 9:9-10;
Could not perfect man – Hebrews 9:9;
Could not remove sin or perfect man – Hebrews 7:25-28; Hebrews 9:1-10; Hebrews 9:11-14; Hebrews 10:1-18;
Gave no pleasure to God. – Hebrews 10:5-10
Left a consciousness of sin. – Hebrews. 10:3, cp.; Hebrews 10:1-4
Purified only the flesh. – Hebrews 9:11-14
Required a better sacrifice than the sacrifice made by man. – Hebrews 9:23-28
Were only a shadow of things to come, not the image. – Hebrews 10:1-18, cp.; Hebrews 8:3-5
Were only a type of Christ. – Hebrews 9:8-10, Hebrews 9:11-14; Hebrews 9:23-28
Were only made with hands-only figures of the true – Hebrews 9:23-24
Were only material sacrifices and ordinances. – Hebrews 9:10, Hebrews 9:1-10
Were only patterns of heavenly things. – Hebrews 9:10, Hebrews 9:1-10; Hebrews 9:23-28
Were powerless. – Hebrews 9:25-26; Hebrews 10:1-4

God says in your place I will establish an unchangeable priesthood. v.20-24. What an awesome picture of Christ! The word robe is the Hebrew word yif-deh-yaw; it means Yah will liberate. Did you get that? God is saying I will raise up one who will be wrapped in the power to liberate. Jesus walked into the temple in Luke ch. 4 and said the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring liberty to the captives.

Are you trusting in something temporary or in the finished work of Christ?

Father, Thank You for sending Jesus to be our great high priest. Thank You that He did what no other could do. Thank You that You’ve set us free. Help us to stop trust in religion or self and to trust in the finished work of Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen
