Today’s Reading: 1 Chronicles 12:19-14:17 (additional reading: Psalm 9:13-20 and Proverbs 19:4-5)

A young man once approached the foreman of a logging crew and asked for a job. “That depends,” replied the foreman. “Let’s see you fell this tree.” The young man stepped forward and skillfully felled a great tree. Impressed, the foreman exclaimed, “Start Monday!”

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday rolled by, and Thursday afternoon the foreman approached the young man and said, “You can pick up your paycheck on the way out today.”

Startled, he replied, “I thought you paid on Friday.” “Normally we do,” answered the foreman, “but we’re letting you go today because you’ve fallen behind. Our daily felling charts show that you’ve dropped from first place on Monday to last on Wednesday.”

“But I’m a hard worker,” the young man objected. “I arrive first, leave last, and I have even worked through my coffee breaks!”

The foreman, sensing the boy’s integrity thought for a minute and then asked, “Have you been sharpening your axe?” The young man replied, “I’ve been working too hard to take the time to sharpen anything.”

When we go through life without seeking God’s direction and His plan for our lives we are a lot like that young man. Our efforts become powerless and fruitless but when we seek God’s direction, follow His plan and let Him reveal His power, nothing can stop us.

Before David attacked the Philistines he stopped and asked for God’s direction and seek guidance.

David waited for God’s answer before he attacked and depended on God so greatly that when the Philistines attacked a second time, he sought God again before he attacked

We need to continually seek God’s direction. We have just as many reasons to be confident like David. We have seen God work in mighty ways. We have experienced His presence in ways that we may not be able to describe. We have been saved by the grace of Jesus.  If we don’t seek Him how will we ever know His will.

  • Are you too busy doing ‘good’ to seek God?
  • Do you need to seek more of God’s guidance?

Father, Thank You for helping us through life and for guiding our steps. Help us to stop being so busy doing the unimportant things in life that we don’t take the time to seek You and understand Your plans for us. Help us to do Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen
