I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. – Psalm 34:1

How comforting it is to remember that God knows our many weaknesses, and He understands how discouraged we can become. Psalm after Psalm, we are reassured of the faithfulness of our God who never leaves us nor forsakes us.

Psalm 34 gives us an invitation to:

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. – Psalm 34:8

As children, we can often be fussy about what we eat. Children see something and decided they don’t like it even before they try it. If we are honest, we as adults often do the same. We often chase things we think will please us, but eventually cause us pain. Likewise, we avoid things which could bless us. As we walk with God, there is one thing we will be sure of: God is good – all the time – God is good.

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. – Psalm 100:5

David wrote this Psalm 34, as he was pretending to be insane in order to save his life. It was not an easy time for David. It was not a season where everything was going great. It was a hard and desperate season in his life, yet he could still say, “God is good!”

Deep in our hearts, we believe in a good God. We often doubt or forget his goodness when life is hard. We see wars; sickness affects us, and we mourn loved one – but God is still good.

I am continually challenged by the words of Corrie Ten Boom who wrote:

“Often I have heard people say, ‘How good God is! We prayed that it would not rain for our church picnic, and look at the lovely weather!’ Yes, God is good when He sends good weather. But God was also good when He allowed my sister, Betsie, to starve to death before my eyes in a German concentration camp. I remember one occasion when I was very discouraged there. Everything around us was dark, and there was darkness in my heart. I remember telling Betsie that I thought God had forgotten us. ‘No, Corrie,’ said Betsie, ‘He has not forgotten us. Remember His Word: “For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him.” ” Corrie concludes, “There is an ocean of God’s love available—there is plenty for everyone. May God grant you never to doubt that victorious love—whatever the circumstances.”
