7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT

We have been learning more of Holy Spirit over the last few weeks. First we looked at the promise of the Holy Spirit; after we considered why so many people are living spiritless lives. We then seen how the Holy Spirit ministers to us and lastly how the Holy Spirit empower us to work.

Today we will start to look at Spiritual Gifts. Among other things, the Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to followers of Christ.

Paul said in Romans 1:11; “I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong, that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.”

He says again in 1 Corinthians 14:1; “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts.”

Acts, Chapter 19, 11 says that God did extraordinary miracles, a spiritual gift, through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.

Let’s start off with a definition of spiritual gifts. What is a spiritual gift? A spiritual gift is simply a supernatural ability given to all Christians to do God’s work on earth. It’s an ability given by God, to all of God’s people, to make a difference first in the church and then overflowing into the world.

1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant…4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. 1 Corinthians 12:1, 4-6 NIV

Paul says, “Brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.” Yet, according to a recent study in the USA, 87% of Christians don’t know anything about their spiritual gifts. That’s almost 9 in 10 Christians, who don’t know anything about their gifts. They are ignorant.

So over the next days we are first going to look at ‘what spiritual gifts are not’ to help us understand better ‘what spiritual gifts are’. We will then take a look at some examples of spiritual gifts before moving onto How do we discover our gifts.

I hope that excites you and I continue to be excited as we grow together.
