Yesterday we began to see that God uses circumstances to guide us. Firstly we can see this in the early church, as they were persecuted they started to spread, preaching the gospel to many nations and fulfilling God’s plan. A situation like this can be hard for us to understand. Often we want just to see God guiding us through good things. But we need to always remember that God has our lives in his hands and He is guiding us in the perfect steps.

A great example of this is in the life of Joseph. Firstly God speaks and gives direction to Joseph through a dream, but then the story changes and this is the last time we see God speaking to him in this way, from this point on circumstances seem to take over. Firstly his own brothers plot to kill him, but end up throw him in a ditch before he ends up being sold to a caravan of Ishmaelites  twenty shekels of silver who just happened to be passing by and they took him to Egypt.

In Genesis 39:1 we read that they sold Joseph to Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh’s guard. Potiphar appointed Joseph superintendent of his household, and they both prospered. But Potiphar’s wife said she wanted to have sex with Joseph, and, when her advances were turned down, she brought a false accusation against him before her husband, and Joseph was thrown into prison.

Not long after the warden put Joseph in charge of the other prisoners and soon afterward Pharaoh’s chief cup bearer and chief baker, who had offended the king, were thrown into the prison. One morning they both told Joseph their dreams of the previous night, which they were unable to interpret, and Joseph told them that the chief cup bearer would be reinstated within three days but that the chief baker would be hanged. Joseph requested the cup bearer to mention him to Pharaoh and secure his release from prison, but the cup bearer, reinstalled in office, forgot Joseph.

After Joseph was in prison for two more years, Pharaoh had two dreams which disturbed him. The chief cup bearer remembered Joseph and spoke of his skill to Pharaoh. Joseph interpreted the dreams as foretelling that seven years of abundance would be followed by seven years of famine, and advised Pharaoh to store surplus grain during the years of abundance. Before Joseph was 30 years old, Pharaoh made him second over Egypt.

You can continue to read the story in Genesis, but what we see is that all these events pr circumstances took place, just to fulfil what God had spoken to Joseph in the dream while he was still at home with his family.

Sometimes the path we seem to be taking doesn’t seem to match the way we think it should. It seemed that every time things got a little better for Joseph they got worst again, but what we really see is that each point God was guiding him.

Just remember whatever circumstance you might find yourself living in today, if you are submitted to God’s plan for you life, then he is guiding you!
