Something which God has been speaking to me a lot about these last few weeks is Grace. Over the past weeks I have really been challenged over my view of Grace and now have a much more wonderful understanding of what this word Grace really means. Brennan Manning claimed “No man can adequately reach and explain a single word of God with all his words” and while I believe this to be true, my desire is that over the next few days you will gain a fresh insight of just how wonderful God’s grace really is.
Jerry Bridges wrote: ‘Grace is God’s free and unmerited favor shown to guilty sinners who deserve only judgment. It is the love of God shown to the unlovely. It is God reaching downward to people who are in rebellion against Him.’ There is something about God’s grace which means that we don’t need to live in the pretence of perfect lives, but even in the acceptance of our own failing, we see the Grace of God all the more.
When we understand the Grace of God it will change every aspect of our lives. It will change the way we relate to God, fellow Christians and those we consider the ‘chief of sinners’. Maybe it was this understand of Grace which changed Paul’s self-perspective from being the ‘Pharisee of the Pharisees’ to considering himself ‘The chief of sinners’ (1 Tim 1:15) or ‘The lease of all believers’ (Eph 3:8) and saying that ‘If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness’ (2 Corinthians 11:30). Where we are weak, God get’s all the glory because of his Grace in us.
God loved us and showed his grace to us, not because we were lovely or had anything lovely to offer, but because he is love. Check out this video, I found it both amazing but also very challenging to how I treat others. May God grace abound more and more in our lives.
