Key Verse: The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. – Psalm 18:2
Maybe like me, you remember joyfully singing at Sunday school, ‘The Wise Man Built His House upon the Rock’ which takes inspiration from Matthew 7. Then there are the words of the great hymn by Edward Mote which read, “My hope is built on nothing less, Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness” and affirms that we should be standing on the Christ the Solid Rock as opposed to all other ground is sinking sand, which symbolizes everything else this World offers.
Everyone puts confidence in something and what we put our hope in becomes our foundation for life. Many build their lives on the foundation of money, possessions, and popularity. Others put their faith in grades, health, relationships and …well, you get the picture. These are not all bad, but they are all temporary. As 2 Samuel 22:32 reminds us, “For who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is a solid rock?”
In scripture, God is often likened to a rock. Rocks by their very nature are solid, secure and steadfast. So we can easily begin to see why the psalmist David and others were so keen to use this analogy. They understood that God is our Rock.
When everything around us seems to be shifting and changing, we can always cling firmly to the rock which does not move and remains the same. The Lord, like a rock, is the only one who provides stability and immutability in our lives. Solid-rock faith is faith in the Solid Rock. The storms will come, but our foundation will stand firm when built in Him.
