Today’s ReadingJoshua 11:1-12:24 (additional reading Psalm 84:1-12 and Proverbs 13:5-6)

Key Verse: “So Joshua took the entire land, just as the Lord had directed Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal divisions. Then the land had rest from war.” Joshua 11:23

If you have tried to master any athletic skill, then you know that follow-through is crucial. Follow through is extremely important in basketball, baseball, football, tennis, racquetball, golf, bowling, along with many others. In fact, you cannot be successful in sports until you have mastered follow through. The principle of follow through is one of the most important principles in life.

Not only is the principle of follow-through particularly important in sports, but profoundly imperative in one’s spiritual life. In any endeavour, experience, or enterprise concerning spiritual things, follow through is of the utmost importance. It is one thing to begin to apply the principles for victory in the Christian life, but another thing to follow through to complete victory.

Our reading today (Joshua 11:16-23) seem to give a glowing account of full victory. It seems as if the Israelites lived happily ever after. But, that is not the end of the story because Joshua failed to follow through all the way to total victory. As a result of this failure, disastrous things happened in the future of the entire nation. The same lesson is true for us today. If we do not learn to follow through in correcting those areas in our lives, we will experience defeat in the future. This can be a problem for many of us. We almost obtain total victory. We almost get victory over those problem areas of life, but almost is not follow-through – almost is not enough!

Are there any areas where you have failed to follow through? Have you made some commitments, but failed to keep them? Don’t you think it is time for you to follow through on all them now? Remembering Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod, provide us good motivation to follow through on our commitments.

Reflection

  • What have you started that you need to finish?
  • Is there something that keeps coming back to haunt you?

Prayer

Father, Thank You that You give us the victory in Christ. Help us follow You fully and to move on to the place You call us. Help us to deal with those issues that need dealing with. In Jesus’ name, Amen
